What the NBA Announced
Awful Announcing reported on 19 October that the NBA is bringing Tap to Watch links to TikTok and X this season. Posts using #NBA on TikTok will carry a link to the game, as will posts from creators the league has cleared to use game highlights. On X, a new NBA Gametime experience shows where each game airs as fans follow scores and clips.
Tap to Watch launched last season on the NBA App, NBA.com and team sites, with partner links on Google, Meta, X, Snap and Reddit. This year the NBA App also adds Game Pulse, a live tracker that puts highlights and stats on one screen, and AskNBA, an AI assistant that answers questions with league data. "The breadth of our digital ecosystem allows us to connect with NBA fans in more ways than ever before," said Chris Benyarko, the NBA's head of direct-to-consumer products, technology and operations.
Highlights Now Lead Fans to the Live Game
NBA games this season are spread across ESPN, NBC, Prime Video and local streams, and fans still have to work out where to watch. The NBA's answer starts with the clip. A fan sees a highlight on TikTok while the game is on, taps once and lands on the broadcast.
That only works when highlights go out during the game. A clip published after the final buzzer still gets views, but it can no longer send anyone to a live game.
What It Takes for Other Leagues
Most leagues and federations do not have the NBA's digital team. The workflow behind the idea is the same at any scale.
Clips During the Live Window
Every big moment needs to reach social platforms within minutes. Zentag AI cuts clips from the live feed as moments happen, from streams ingested over RTMP, SRT or HLS. Our piece on going from RTMP feed to social clip walks through the timing.
Vertical Versions for TikTok and Shorts
TikTok and YouTube Shorts are 9:16 platforms. AI Reframe produces vertical and square versions next to the 16:9 original, so the same clip can go to every platform at once.
Clips Creators Can Use
The NBA clears creators to post its highlights. Leagues that want the same reach need a steady supply of branded clips with metadata, so partners and creators get approved footage and the league keeps control of what is published. Our piece on why metadata matters covers how that record is built.
Where to Start
Pick one competition, publish clips during live games with a link to the broadcast or stream in every post, and measure how many fans tap through to the game. Our guide to optimising highlights for Shorts, Reels and TikTok covers the formats. Book a demo to see live clipping on your own feed.
